/L.A.B. channels + experience

childhood - “julia is a monkey girl” the community called out. “why are you crying?” “nothing, nothing, i have something in my eye” - my mother would wax my arms and legs, it was so painful on my little body and it took so many hours. I loved her for it though. I was so hairy, like my lebanese grandfather, long dark hair. I didn't have my mom’s gold skin though, mine was so white it almost looked green, making my covered arms that much more noticeable. If my body hair were put in a frame, in my name, to support a narrative - that would not be for my own personhood. it would be for a story that was for their own. not for the agenda of my humanity, my individuality, my story, my dignity - sad - imagine being defined by the world, in history, from that alone? where is her liberation? still, within the spectacle - can we do better for her hurt? must we continue to produce material that would equally hurt?

20231024 13.51 est - Where does the formation of cultural appropriation lie in the reciprocity narrative? From my positioning and lens, what allows for this permission? Coming from a Jamaican lineage, where much of the presented tradition is sourced, I relate from this human orientation and look forward to learning Why this is Ok.
